The Art of PailloneTechnique Mastery between time-honored techniques and modern innovation Enamel 1962 Introduced in 1962, the Croisillon enamel bracelet fuses Jean Schlumbergers's fascination with color and form with his love of craft and material. The designer is credited with reviving the art of vitreous enameling, a technically demanding artform from the 19th century that lends to intensely vibrant hues. The complex process, which is repeated up to fifteen times, involves the layering of precious gold foil alternated with meticulously "painted" vitreous enamel. The multiple layers and firings result in the creation of colors of extraordinary depth with shimmering luminosity. To create Jean Schlumberger's signature paillonné pieces, enamel is repeatedly layered with alternating sheets of precious gold or silver foil, creating rich hues with extraordinary depth and luminosity.
