Chopard glams up the Cannes

Chopard at Cannes 2019

Chopard at Cannes 2019: It was in 1998 that Chopard was designated as an Official Partner of the Cannes International Film Festival; since then, the haute joaillerie maison has been the jeweller of choice for numerous stunningly beautiful stars as they walked the famous red carpets at the festival. This year too, the list of stars who wore Chopard to tread the red carpet is too long to list in one short article; rather, we bring you a round-up of star-studded events hosted by the marque during the festival…

Chopard LOVE Night

It was the evening of May 17, 2019 at Cannes, and the scent of romance wafted gently through the dreamy setting of the Chopard LOVE Night, Chopard’s grand soirée in Cannes. It was an evening full of surprises, notably featuring a dramatic performance by opera singers Anna Netrebko and Yusif Eyvazov, a stage act by artiste Dita von Teese, and a runway show of haute joaillerie creations from the Red Carpet Collection. A concert by global superstar Mariah Carey was the crowning moment of the night’s festivities.

This year, Chopard had chosen LOVE as the central theme of its activities at the 72nd Cannes International Film Festival, also setting the tone for the grand soirée organised by Co-President and Artistic Director Caroline Scheufele; the decoration designed by the Maison embodied a splendid tribute to the film sets of the great romantic movies. Guests were welcomed on a coloured carpet made by Aquafil from ENONYL – a fibre made entirely from recycled plastic such as end-of-life fishing nets, which perfectly reflected the Maison’s ethical commitments.

Among those gracing the event were Julianne Moore, along with Elle Fanning (member of the jury of the 72nd Cannes International Film Festival), Richard Madden, Liu Tao, Amber Heard, Priyanka Chopra and her husband Nick Jonas, Adrian Brody, Araya Hargate (Chopard brand ambassador), Izabel Goulart, Marica Pellegrinelli, Petra Nemcova and Catrinel Marlon.

The enchanting setting was a fitting prelude to the dinner prepared by Käfer premium catering, staged in a ballroom inspired by the “Phantom of the Opera” beneath an impressive pendant chandelier measuring five metres in diameter. The dinner notably featured a performance by one of the most talented opera singer power couples: soprano Anna Netrebko and her husband, tenor Yusif Eyvazov, who performed three of the most beautiful opera duets to a piano accompaniment – “O soave fanciulla” from Puccini’s La Bohème; “Libiamo be lieti calici” from Verdi’s La Traviata; and “Non ti scordar di me” by Ernesto de Curtis.

At the end of the dinner, ten pairs of models adorned with the Red Carpet Collection – and attired in Elie Saab dresses and Brioni suits – brought a radiant glow to Chopard’s haute joaillerie creations. The glittering show concluded with a final runway walk by Eva Herzigova, Maria Borges and Sui He. Guests then crossed the stage to admire an enchanted forest planted with flowering trees under a dreamily misty sky. Burlesque artiste Dita von Teese also gave a performance that was both charming and sensual.

Finally, when the clock struck midnight, international pop and R&B star Mariah Carey appeared on stage, electrifying the audience with her legendary hit songs: “Emotions”, “Always Be My Baby”, “My All”, “Touch my Body”, “Vision of Love”, “We Belong Together”, and “Hero”. Following the prolonged applause honouring this exceptional concert, guests danced the night away to the sounds of DJ Cassidy on the turntables.

Trophée Chopard 2019

A few days before the closing ceremony of the 72nd Cannes International Film Festival, the Trophée Chopard committee chose to honour British actress Florence Pugh and French actor François Civil with the prestigious award. During an official dinner organised on May 20 at the Agora by Pierre Lescure, President of the Cannes Film Festival; Thierry Frémaux, General Delegate; and Caroline Scheufele, Co-President and Artistic Director of Chopard, Chinese actress Zhang Ziyi, illustrious godmother of the Trophée Chopard 2019, presented both winners with their trophies. Former laureates, such as Marion Cotillard and Léa Seydoux, were in the audience, which included a large number of actors on hand to congratulate the two young thespians.

Created in 2001 on the initiative of Caroline Scheufele, a great lover of the seventh art, the Trophée Chopard yearly rewards two up-and-coming talents in the world of international film-making. This year, the Trophée Chopard was part of the official calendar of the 72nd Cannes International Film Festival. Florence Pugh and François Civil received their precious distinction during a star-studded dinner prepared by highly acclaimed chef Mauro Colagreco. The event was held at the seaside Agora venue in a resolutely French Riviera spirit and at the joint invitation of Pierre Lescure, Thierry Frémaux, and Caroline Scheufele.

The winners were determined by votes cast by the Trophée Chopard Committee composed of Steven Gaydos, editor-in-chief of “Variety” magazine, partner to the Trophée; Caroline Scheufele; and various laureates, godmothers and godfathers of previous editions. It was a truly special evening, permeated by a sense of passing on the baton, which saw the great Chinese actress Zhang Ziyi, a personal friend of Caroline Scheufele, present the awards to these two rising stars of world cinema.

Guests in attendance included Marion Cotillard and Léa Seydoux, themselves winners of the Chopard Trophy in 2004 and 2009, alongside Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, Elle Fanning and Maimouna N’Diaye – president and jury members of the 72nd Cannes International Film Festival – as well as Dakota Fanning, Clotilde Coureau, Isabelle Adjani, Colin and Livia Firth, Chloë Sevigny, James Norton, Stacy Martin, Catrinel Marlon, Guan Xiaotong, Pawel Pawlikowski, Natalia Vodianova, Monia Chokri, Gilles Lellouche, Joséphine Japy, Elodie Bouchez and Nadine Labaki. Following the eventful and exciting dinner, which was closed by a performance of Rossy de Palma singing, an after-party organised by Caroline Scheufele took place at the Club by Albane, with The Aveners on the turntables.

The Gentlemen’s Evening

In what has become a ritual part of Chopard’s activities at the Cannes International Film Festival, an array of elegant actors, style connoisseurs and other gentlemen visiting the French Riviera congregated on May 21, 2019 on the Chopard Rooftop for The Gentlemen’s Evening, hosted by the Maison’s Co-Presidents, Caroline Scheufele and her brother Karl-Friedrich Scheufele.

Because Chopard displays equal mastery in the fields of haute joaillerie and haute horlogerie, the maison annually dedicates one of its Cannes evenings to gentlemen as well as to its L.U.C and Classic Racing watch collections. At the joint invitation of Caroline Scheufele and her brother Karl-Friedrich Scheufele, the Chopard Rooftop – specially redecorated for this occasion to evoke the atmosphere of an English private club – welcomed Gilles Lellouche, Brooklyn Beckham, Livia et Colin Firth, Chloë Sevigny, Zhu Yilong, Alessandro Ristori, Eric Underwood, Craig McGinlay, Richard Biedul, Oliver Cheshire et Pixie Lott, Carlo Sestini, Adriana Lima, Chris Pittanguy, Camille Charrière, Karolina Kurkova, Morgan O’Connor, Andrew Cooper, Sam Way, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Charles Gordon-Lennox, Alberto Morillas as well as Tatiana Navka.

The sunset view from the Chopard Rooftop overlooking the bay of Cannes and the Palais de Festivals was universally enjoyed by all to the sound of live music by Alessandro Ristori and the Portofinos. To prolong the party spirit, DJ Nathalie Duchêne took over on the turntables, inviting guests to dance the night away.
